Note
Ruth F. Fox is representative of a majority of women artists. She was married for over forty years, had three sons, managed a household, volunteered at school and civic associations, attended all extended family events to hold multiple generations together and worked a full-time job outside of the home. She painted in her spare time. Ruth was a self-taught artist who started painting later in her life and found inspiration for her painting similar to Henri Rousseau, primarily from travel brochures, magazines and her children’s activities. Her art focused on land and seascapes with some genre scenes. She was most active from the mid 1970’s to late 1980’s. She painted in the basement on a large antique wooden easel that she purchased at a garage sale. Her family members continually offered her constructive advice on how to paint and referred to her as the “Grandma Moses of New Jersey”. She never sold a painting, but gifted her works to friends, family and to anyone who commented favorably on her work. A Winter Sunset was considered by her friends, family and art instructors to be her best work. It hung over the couch in the family living room so that everyone who visited could see her painting. I know this because I am her oldest son and it was because of my mom that I have a strong appreciation of art and built an art collection with my wife, Ann Marie. If my mom were alive, she would “get a kick” out of inviting all of her friends to see her painting exhibited in a public art exhibition.
